Gabe Spencer holds a fine back-country brown trout caught on April 17, 2010 (click image to enlarge).

Lucky Gabe Spencer got a great Christmas gift back in December: a gift certificate for some guided fly fishing!

Gabe called to redeem the certificate and he and Altamont Anglers guide Teo Whitlock decided it was time for a trip to the back-country. The stream must remain anonymous, to protect the trout, but it's only an hour or so from downtown Asheville, and feels like a million miles from civilization.

Now is definitely the time for back-country trips: stream temperatures are warming up to the trout "happy zone", bugs are abundant--look for black caddis, Blue Quills, Quill Gordons, and all the mid-Spring suspects. Or, just put on a Parachute Adams with a bead-head Hare's Ear behind it and enjoy...
