Davidson River Report for June 8, 2007

Did we mention that the water is low? Altamont Anglers guide Jerry McNeely and his friend Summer Worley hit the Davidson yesterday afternoon, June 7, 2007 and managed to find some water in between the rocks. The picture below proves that you can still catch nice fish, but if you look into the background behind Summer and her big Brown Trout you'll see rocks where normally water flows. The current 30cfs (cubic feet per second) flow on the Davidson is worse than the previously recorded low for the date, recorded back in 1988. These conditions mandate extra care in the playing and handling of fish, as they're already stressed due to lack of oxygen. Survival after rough handling or over-long playing of the fish is iffy under these conditions, so be quick to land them and release them.

Here's a nice shot of Summer and a great brown trout--look at the rocks in the background: normally, they're under water! (click the image for a larger view)...

That being said, there are stretches of river downstream that have sufficient flow to allow for some decent fishing, and the bugs are in full force now: Green Drakes have come and gone (with no reports of major success during the spinner fall that we've heard), Yellow Sallies, PMD's, Sulphurs and myriad Caddis and Midges are on the water now, and there's nice dry fly fishing available.

But the Davidson River trout can also be cooperative, when approached politely and with the proper fly, as young Jon Hoban discovered on April 13. Click the picture for a larger view to appreciate what a joy fly fishing can be...

We are sometimes mystified by the psychology that makes a fly fisher--known to be a lover of solitude in nature, ever seeking sanctuary from the stresses of the city on the tranquil currents of remote trout streams--return over and over (almost pathologically) to a crowded stretch of water adjacent to large parking lot full of tourists. Especially when lonely, pristine trout streams surround the place. Then we remember: it's all about the hogs...

Well, if you want a bend in your rod, you can get it on the Davidson River. Current conditions are typical: crowds of anglers and crowds of midges. Stream flows are great, for now, and the temperatures are right for the trout. If you can't drum up the curiosity, courage or imagination to go find a fishing spot to yourself, come on and join the crowd--we did, on March 7, 2007.

Here's a shot taken on the Davidson River on 7/25/06 proving that even on low water, the fish will eat. "...I can't remember the total of fish caught, somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty, with many more pulled hooks and one breakoff. An incredible first day of standing in a river waving a stick... Without Teo's patience and instruction I'm sure the day would not have been the same..."(more, photos)
Larry Littrell,

Larry Newman drove down from Chesterfield, VA for some trout fishing and here's what he had to say: "What a trip! I knew I made the right choice of guide service when I asked Teo where his fly rod was and he said he did not bring one because he was there for me. Hitting the tri-fecta of trout (a rainbow trout, a brown trout and a brook trout) was all the more special because I had not caught a trout on the fly rod until that day...I will never forget the 19"+ rainbow..."

"You gave us a great guide...he put us on the fish and he was very patient with us non-expert types. In the float boat he worked his butt off to get us to the fish, and that's not easy in that river and under those conditions..."
