Chris D'Hespeel (who assures us his name is unusual even in his native Belgium) hosted a couple of very sensible young Europeans over the Christmas holidays: his nephew Jochen and Jochen's friend Rennie. We say they're very sensible because, when he asked what they'd like to do in the States, they said they wanted to do some fly fishing! So Chris called Altamont Anglers and booked a half-day of guided fly fishing, driving up from his home in Florida for the event. Altamont Anglers Fly Fishing Guide Teo Whitlock picked them up in Asheville, NC and they headed for the Davidson River on December 21, 2005.

The first step in a fly fishing excursion: getting outfitted. Here Jochen and Rennie marvel at the super-sized waist lines of American waders (click the picture to enlarge it)...
Jochen and Rennie try on their waders

The next step is getting all the gear rigged: here Teo ties on the secret fly while Jochen observes the technique (click to enlarge)...

Success! Teo holds Jochen's trophy for the camera. Jochen appears to have caught a rare American Blue-Banded Brown Trout (or maybe that's just a shadow on the fish--click to enlarge)...

We're happy to say that Uncle Chris caught fish too--here he holds a typical Davidson River rainbow trout (click to enlarge)

(Altamont Anglers operates on Pisgah National Forest Rivers under USDA Forest Service Permit #PIS6560)

They Coulda Been Contenders!
Or wall-hangers--but we released them all!!
