They Coulda Been Contenders!
Or wall-hangers--but we released them all!!

Kudos:

Rule #1: fish where they are

Altamont Anglers fly fishing guides have been guiding and teaching anglers since 1986. Our knowledge of the waters around our home of Asheville, NC lets us customize fly fishing trips to your special needs & desires. Asheville fly fishing offers the daytime experience of pristine trout streams set in beautiful Smoky Mountain settings and the evening experience of a vibrant downtown that offers fine dining, entertainment and arts.

You will find our rates for full-day or half-day walk-wade fly fishing trips (and fly fishing lessons) and float trips to be fair and competitive, with quality equipment and satisfying lunches provided at no extra charge! Orvis fly fishing gear is standard for all our trips, to match the quality of service provided by our guides. Our guides are CPR certified, and we are fully insured through Philadelphia Ins. Companies.

Western North Carolina (wnc) offers diverse stream conditions, from tiny, plunge-pool headwater streams to broad, open-valley rivers. Our experienced wnc fly fishing guides provide the finest guided fly fishing trips--wading the trout streams or floating the rivers for smallmouth bass and trout--that a fly fishing enthusiast can have! Our ability to deliver on this promise is guaranteed by a staff drawn from the finest fly fishing guides in North Carolina.

The Davidson River, West Fork Pigeon, South Toe River and many that should remain un-named provide great trout fishing (if you know where the fish are!). The Tuckasegee River, French Broad River, Watauga River and South Holston River offer opportunities to float for trout and smallmouth bass.

We've been teaching individuals and groups the skills of fly fishing and leading experienced anglers to the trophy fish of their dreams for years, and we offer a range of angling experiences from wild back-country Brook Trout to technically challenging Spring Creek-type tailwater fly fishing for big Brown Trout that tests the skills of the most advanced angler.

The National Forest areas around Asheville, Brevard, and Hendersonville North Carolina are our first targets for quick access to wild, pristine trout fishing: If conditions demand it, we'll travel a little farther out toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to our south, or the South Toe River/ Black Mountain area to our north. These wild and beautiful forests offer a variety of walk-and-wade trout fishing opportunities.

When we want the rewards of fishing to more challenging fish, we travel toward Tennessee and the tri-cities area of Johnson City, Elizabethton and Kingsport where we fish the TVA controlled tail-water streams of the South Holston River or the Watauga River. The releases of water below TVA dams on these rivers provides for constant year-round stream temperatures, predictable hatches for us to match, and excellent opportunities for float-fishing that rival the legendary fly fishing rivers of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and the Rocky Mountains.

A Guided Trip Includes:
Transportation--Our guide will pick you up at the time and location of your choosing--typically at your lodgings--and take you to your fishing destination. Arrangements can be made in advance to meet wherever you choose.
Fishing Gear-- We provide basic outfits (rod, reel, flyline) and wading gear (stocking-foot waders with felt-soled wading boots) for clients who need them. This can save weight and space for those traveling to the area, although most clients prefer to use their own equipment.
Food--Lunch, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are provided by your guide on all full-day trips. Half-day trips do not include lunch. Your guide will discuss any special dietary needs with you in advance.
Terminal Tackle--meaning leaders and flies: your guide will have the leaders and flies necessary for the trip, with the understanding that any flies lost (to trees or trout) or damaged (by trout teeth, for example) have been purchased by you at $1.75 each. This charge will be appended to the balance of the guide fee due to be charged to the Visa or Mastercard with which you booked the trip.

But you need to provide:
Fishing licenses--available on-line by following the "fishing licenses" link at the top of this page. Residents of North Carolina should select the Comprehensive License option, a $20 license which includes the necessary Trout Stamp and is good for 12 months from the date of purchase. Non-residents--a license including the Trout Stamp is $20 for one day, $25 for three days, and $40 for the annual license. Similar choices are available at the link for Tennessee licenses.
Sunglasses & raingear --are recommended. The sunglasses should be polarized (cutting surface glare and allowing easier wading and fish spotting), but are essential eye protection in any case. Raingear makes life more pleasant in an unexpected cloudburst!
Gratuities--are not included in our guide fees, but are appreciated by our hard-working guides. If you feel that you've gotten good service, feel free to show your gratitude!

Booking and Cancellations:
A 50% deposit is required to book a guided trip (we accept Visa, Mastercard and personal checks) and the balance is due on the day of the trip. Shortly after booking your trip you will receive a confirmation letter. If paying by check, the deposit is due upon receipt of the confirmation; if paying by credit card the deposit will be collected upon booking the trip. If reservations are cancelled more than 30 days before a scheduled trip, a full refund of deposit will be issued. Deposits are forfeited on trips cancelled between seven and thirty days prior. Clients are responsible for full payment when cancellations are made less than seven days before the scheduled trip. Cancellations due to weather will be rescheduled.
