Ken Peterson and Tom Martin make their homes in the Charlotte, NC area, but travel far and wide in search of smallmouth bass, frequently fishing the hallowed waters of Canada's smallmouth fisheries. But when they got curious about the possibilities for good smallmouth bass fishing a littler closer to home, they called Altamont Anglers to book an exploratory trip. Altamont Anglers' guide Teo Whitlock introduced Tom and Ken to the French Broad River on August 14, 2007 and found typical August conditions: the bass were taking their siestas during the heat of the day, coming out to "play" (feed) after the sun got off the water in the early evening. Early and late are when to seek the smallies this time of year--get in the shade during the middle of the day. (A more recent bass report is available by clicking here) . Here are Ken's thoughts on the day:
"We had a great time with Teo , excellent young man and a hard working guide .
We plan to be back , keep me/us informed regarding the river conditions as I/we would like to be able to enjoy the whole river and he is also to keep me/us posted on the Holston River for a trip .
See you later this year, Ken"
Ken had some other incidental comments on the cleanliness of the boat, but after looking at this picture we wonder how he even saw the boat through the maze of rods he's got rigged up (click the image for a larger view)...

Here's a nice shot of Tom Martin with a smallie that apparently needed a little "tug" to achieve the desired weight (click to enlarge the image)

They Coulda Been Contenders!
Or wall-hangers--but we released them all!!
