Larry Littrell flew up from his home in Florida to meet Altamont Anglers' guide Teo Whitlock for a float trip on the South Holston River on September 20, 2005. Although Larry grew up in the Bluff City area (our destination when fishing the South Holston), he didn't start fly fishing until he'd moved to Florida. He's an accomplished angler for redfish and other 'denizens of the deep', but this was his first time angling for trout and he was wisely seeking some guidance. We'll let Larry tell the story:
"October 30, 2005 is a day that will live in infamy for me. I met Teo Whitlock in Bluff City and a few short minutes later we were scampering down a bank clad in waders in search of trout. After a few minutes of demonstrating proper technique for fishing the river I was ready to roll.
Soon after I had my first trout pulling line through the guides. A beautiful brown that came unbuttoned just as he approached an outstretched net. There was no time for sorrow, the next fish was a couple of casts away.
Teo and I spent the morning marveling at the bite and continued to work the same pool trying different presentations and flies as the whims of the trout changed. The bite was on, as evidenced by our lack of perception of time. We realized over five hours had passed so we made a break for lunch.
We returned to wade a nearby section with moving water and again a few minutes of instruction along with continued coaching produced more trout.
I cant remember the total of fish caught, somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty, with many more pulled hooks and one breakoff. An increadable first day of standing in a river waving a stick.
Without Teo's patience and instruction I'm sure the day would not have been the same.
Thanks to Drake and Teo for a rewarding experience. I'll be back soon, no doubt."
Thanks to you, Larry! And, as all our neighbors say, "Y'all come back..."

Here are some more shots from the day's fishing--not a bad first day fishing for trout with a fly rod! (click the thumbnails below to see full-size pictures)...
