They Coulda Been Contenders!
Or wall-hangers--but we released them all!!

Kudos:

Altamont Anglers clients Scott and David Luttrell fish with us a few times each year, and their most recent visit was their first excursion on the South Holston River.

The South Holston is a challenging river to fish, with gin-clear water inhabited by leader-shy trout that rarely fall for a fly showing any drag. The currents make drag-free drifts tough to accomplish and when you add into the mix the tiny flies on skinny tippets required to fool them, these are some hard fish to fool!

But fool them they did! And the reward of landing a hog like that under these conditions is reflected in the grin on Scott's face.

It's nice when fathers and sons can fish together and the competition factor is nullified by the fact that everyone catches "the big one". In this case, the big brown trout David's holding here seems to have had an encounter of the biting kind with an even bigger brown behemoth. That's the one they'll probably come back for....

Scott and David have been fishing with Altamont Anglers' guide Teo Whitlock for a few years now, and we've archived some past trips here: click to visit the Luttrell photo archive
