Eric Schroeder lives in Victor, ID, near some of the finest trout fishing in the country, so it's not surprising that he recently bought a drift boat. Folks with drift boats like to take friends and family fishing--nothing better than getting your buddies to do the rowing while you fish--and Eric has high hopes of taking his father-in-law, Bob Stephens, out on the rivers when he visits Idaho. On a recent visit to the Stephens' home near Asheville, NC, Eric took advantage of the instructional services of Altamont Anglers to book a day of fly fishing instruction for Bob, to give him the advantage of some experience before their upcoming boating adventures.
Altamont Anglers' guide Teo Whitlock took Eric and Bob over to the Davidson River, where he first got Eric "dialed in" on the habits of the Davidson's wiley trout (even experienced anglers like Eric can benefit from the knowledge of a local guide when they approach a new river). Teo then turned his full attention to Bob's fly fishing lesson. It appears from the photos below that Bob was a quick learner, and we can only hope, for Eric's sake, that he picks up the art of rowing this quickly...
Bob recently wrote us with his view of the outing:
"I just wanted to drop you a line to express our sincere thanks for a great experience with Teo on the Davidson.... Little did I know that within minutes of going "feet-wet" in the Davidson Teo and his magic sun glasses would have us on some really nice fish. For this old gray-haired pilot, Teo's patience and knowledge were priceless. The late afternoon walk down river paid great dividends as Teo once again put us on a "stack-o-trout." After hooking my big rainbow and seeing him break water once, I ask Teo to land him so I wouldn't add another fish to my lost-fish count. Thankfully Teo declined and provided expert coaching to help me get the biggest fish of the day in the net. Great fun and the best Christmas present ever!
Sincerely,
Bob Stephens
Jacksonville, FL"
