though the Watauga River was running full-bore under the boats, the intrepid boatsmen of Team Tootleman remained undaunted, casting the heavy rigs required for heavy water and landing decent fish under tough conditions. Most guides time their float trips on the Watauga for low flows, some even avoiding high water altogether. This is not because the fishing is bad under these conditions, but because it's more demanding of both guides and their clients and most guides prefer setting the bar as low as possible for themselves. But for those that accept the challenge of tougher conditions, the rewards are often worth it: the ratio of big fish to smaller fish caught is always higher when the water is up--you'll catch fewer fish overall, but the one's you put in the boat will be bigger!
